A very good friend of mine with whom I went to college, is having a baby coming up in October. She is about 5 years younger than me and like a sister. She is one of those friends that you can go for months without speaking and then pick right up where you left off. I adore her so much and I am so excited for her little one, Jackson, to arrive in a few months.

I wanted to do something very special for her, however, a quilt was out because one of her family members has already taken on that task. After a lot of contemplation, I settled on a bag with the intention of filling it with all kinds of goodies. I love making bags and I know for a fact that a girl can never have too many bags. I chose Anna Graham's Super Tote Bag. The bag is large and has a lot of internal pockets for her to put diapers, bottles, cloths and whatever else it is that babies need to function.
I've had this Cotton and Steel fabric sitting in my stash for the longest time and I am obsessed with it. It popped out at me as the a perfect fit for my good friend. I am glad that it has found a good home.

I've only started to create the goodies to go inside, but so far I have a diaper clutch that will hold wipes, diapers and will fold out into a changing pad. It turned out a little smaller than I had hoped, so she may only be able to use the changing pad part for a few months. I used Bonnie Christine's 'Hello Bear' fabric for the clutch which I think is perfect for a baby boy. I will also add some hand made bibs and burp cloths (I have a full half yard bundle of the line to play with) but I am at a loss for further items. Obviously I can add some diapers and bottles but I really want to put more hand-made items as well.
Lately, I have taken a hiatus from quilting. I have 3 actual projects that are quilts that I would really love to finish, but I just haven't been into it lately. I've been obsessed with making bags so I've put quilting on the back burner. I'm not worried though. This happens. I go in cycles, like the economy. Ha. So anyway, I was scrolling through Pinterest and I came across a pin of Thimble Blossom's Round & Round Mini quilt and immediately had the urge to make it. Woo hoo, hiatus over. Now, I know it's only a mini but it is still quilting and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

My points weren't exactly..well, on point, for lack of a better term. Maybe I'm a little rusty. I don't care though, I really love this pattern and the turnout of the mini. I used Aloha girl...just a little bit. I have a massive fat quarter stash that I have been saving up for another quilt idea that I still haven't started...yeaaaaah.
I've been dying to share this latest creation of mine for a couple of weeks now but I was waiting to get a few pictures with my niece...unfortunately, due to circumstances like I have to work, I haven't been able to see her in it. Finally I just bit the bullet and had my husband drop it off to them when he saw them (them being my brother-in-law and his wife) last weekend. So I apologize for my lack of pictures with a baby in this sweet outfit, but I was beginning to think I would never get it posted.

The pattern is called The Pleatie Playsuit and it is by Tadah Patterns. Overall, the pattern was decent to follow along. It had its moments for sure, where I wished things were explained a little better, but overall, I was able to complete it with a minimal amount of seam-ripping and a moderate level of cursing. This was also my first time attempting pleats. They were pretty easy actually and there is absolutely no reason to be afraid of them. In hindsight, I feel a little silly that I was nervous in the first place. You just have to pay very close attention to which side you are sewing on, otherwise you have an inside out pleat.

I also made a matching Reversible Bucket Hat to go along with the romper. This hat was actually a FREE pattern (woohoo) from Oliver and S. You can find it here. At the recommendation of this lovely blog Probably Actually, I added an inch to the rim (I used the extra small size, you may want to add a little more for the larger sizes) to make it more of a sun hat. Probably Actually also links you over to another amazing blog. Jessica, from A Little Gray, shows an altered version of the pattern, eliminating the hand sewing which in my eyes, is completely awesome because I hate hand sewing and I suck at it.
Isn't Sarah Jane for Michael Miller's Out to Sea line just the sweetest? I've been hoarding loads of it in my stash and I cringe every time I cut into it, but it looks so darn cute on a finished product.

Due to my vacation and a little mishap with Miss Kate, my sewing machine, my sewing has come to a halt that past couple of weeks. I had to send Miss Kate in for servicing because she was skipping stitches and then we were in D.C. and then it was back to work. Finally, I got her back and had the last 3 days off, so I've been doing some serious sewing.

I bought Anna Graham's book Handmade Style a few weeks ago but hadn't really had a chance to try any of the patterns from it. One of the first things that caught my eye in the book was her Market Bag, so that was first on my list. I had also been eyeing up her free tutorial for her Trail Tote under the tutorials section of her website, which definitely was next on my list. I'm happy to announce I completed both of them and both patterns were not lacking, as her patterns never are.

I am equally impressed with both products, I love the roominess of the Market Tote. I can see it being perfect for the market or a pool day, or possibly even an overnight bag. The quilting was only slightly painful as straight lines are easy, but let me tell you, there were a lot of them! It was so worth it in the end though because the outcome is just beautiful. I'm sure I will be making more of these for gifts and I may make some for my Etsy Shop as well. For my market tote, I used Robert Kauffman's Essex Dyed Linen in Chambray for exterior panels and the same Essex Dyed Linen in Flax for the interior. The accent panels were various scraps I had laying around. I love soft pastels next to the chambray, it feels so natural and calming.
The trail tote, is a perfect size. I made the smaller one and it works perfectly for my petite self. It is an ideal size to hold just the essentials without weighing you down, I think it will go well on vacations as it is flat and small and easy to pack. I used leftovers I had from Bonnie Christine's Winged line, I used her line for Amy Butler's Weekender Bag, and while it was beautiful, it looks slightly like a baby bag with all of those pastels. I opted to use the darker color line for the trail tote and the look is much more appropriate. I can't wait to get this baby out of the house.

I'm making two posts today, this one is just because I wanted to show you what I've been up to the past week, and the next one is sewing related (of course).

I worked 4 straight days in a row (12-hour days, 14 after commuting) so that I could have 5 days off in a row for a 4th of July getaway with my husband. We had big plans to go up to Maine and then drive down the coast and eventually back home. It sounded all good in theory, but when it came down to it, we decided 5 days probably wouldn't be enough to take a trip that should probably be at least a week long, if not longer. So we decided to go to Washington D.C. instead. It is only a 3-hour drive and I am just in love with the city. I lived there back in my early 20s, my play days I like to call them. I had a blast and grew to love Washington D.C dearly. I have rarely been back since, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity, I mean, what better place to spend a 4th of July vacay then the nation's capital?

I just wanted to show you some of the beauty I got to experience while I was there. If you haven't been, or if you have but the last time was on a field trip in fifth grade, I highly recommend you put it on your bucket list.

We were solely entertained walking the city for 3 days. We didn't really spend much money, that is the beauty of D.C. There are so many FREE activities. The public transportation is probably the best in the country and the views are just breathtaking.

Hope you enjoy. How did you spend your 4th of July?

All of the following buildings were just things I saw on our walk down Capital Hill to the monuments. How majestic are these buildings?!

Sometimes I get in random moods and just feel like sewing the most random things. For some reason in my head, I felt like finding a great lunch tote. Not that I really need one and I ended up making 3 of them, so I have no idea what I will do with them but I adore these things and I feel like I just want to make more and more because they are just so darn cute. I foresee them being used as Easter baskets or gift bags or (duh) lunch totes.

This lovely pattern comes from Ayumi over at the Pink Penguin. The link to this particular tutorial is here. The tutorial is precise and easy to follow, I think definitely suitable for a beginner with just a little bit of patience. I whipped up 3 of these in a day, 2 for my nieces and the other one, I'm not really sure, I was just having fun playing with fabric.

I used the Milk, Sugar & Flower line by Penny Lane Fabrics for this one. Doesn't that fabric just melt your heart?
For these two bright lovelies...well, I'm not sure. It was in my stash but I don't have the selvedges and drives me nuts. Any suggestions as to what fabric this is? The accent blue and the pink dots are by Riley Blake, just not sure about that lovely geometric pattern.

A couple of years ago I bought a quilted Vera Bradley bag on sale to tote all of my nursing equipment and information around. It was a great bag with lots of pockets and compartments to store all of my stuff...notebooks, binders, scissors, stethoscope, hemostats...and so on. I do love the bag but there are 2 issues: 1.) I think there are actually TOO many pockets...I can never find anything and 2.) I spilled a massive cup of coffee on it a few days ago.

Fail and fail.

Well, it was actually a good time for fail number 2 because it forced me to create something new and it was perfect timing because I finally received all of the equipment to make Anna Graham's Caravan Tote. You can find her amazing blog and patterns here. Now I know I already raved on about her in my last post when I was showing you her Caravan Pouch, which was the free pattern that came along with this Caravan Tote pattern, but I'm going to go ahead and rave about her again.

This pattern was like a dream to follow. Everything was so simple and well-explained, and most importantly, I love love love the finished product. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite thing I've sewn to date. It just looks so freaking cool, I can't stand it.

I'm loving this bag because there are enough pockets to hold all of my stuff including the multitudes of alcohol swabs that I leave the hospital with in my pockets, and those little blue caps to cap off IV tubing that end up going through the wash and find themselves in the lint trap of our dryer. Not to mention my notebooks, binders, scissors, etc. (see list above) all have compartments in this lovely lovely tote. However, there are not SO many pockets that I can't remember where I put things, so they end up all mixed up together in ALL of the pockets. Anybody have that problem, or am I just a complete train wreck?
I mean, it's summertime, the weather is beautiful and I should be outside but I just don't want to. It would be nice if I could bring my machine outside, which I guess in theory I could but then I'd take my contained sewing mess and transfer it outside and then I'd probably fight with my husband about it...so I'll just keep it inside and feel slightly guilty about it.
Lately, I've been into sewing accessories. Pouches, bags, lunch boxes, camera straps, wristlets...I seem to go in cycles. There are times that all I want to do is quilt. So I'll do that for a while and finish (or start) a bunch of projects and then all of a sudden all I'll want to do is makes garments. So I'll do that for a while until I'll just feel like sewing something else. Eventually, I'll come back to quilts, or garments, or whatever the prior obsession was and the cycle will start all over again. Does that ever happen to any of you?

So anyway, yesterday I made this Caravan Pouch created by Anna over at Noodlehead. I love her patterns so much. They are always so precise and beautifully photographed and easy to follow. The finished products are gorgeous. Now this pouch is actually a free addition to her Caravan Tote created as a tote for knitting or crochet materials. Now I tried my hand at knitting and I didn't stick with it for very long, so I plan on using it for lugging all of my nursing supplies to and from the hospital.

I don't yet have all the supplies in hand to make the tote but I was itching to try this pattern, so I just made the pouch so far. Needless to say, I adore it. I added a removable strap because I tend to carry things around my wrist or else I lose them. It's good to know one's faults eh?
So this little gem has been sitting in my WIP pile for a few months now and I finally broke it out again this week. I almost have all of the blocks complete, but with trying to add things to the store and our recent move and any other excuse in the book that I can think of, this little lovely has been sitting lonely in my chest for a while.

I started it as soon as Bonnie and Camille's latest line, Daysail, came out. I love this line so much. The colors and textures are a perfect depiction of a day out on the water. The colors come together and can feel masculine or feminine...the perfect gender-neutral palette. I made my blocks using a layer cake and it works perfectly to cut into the 4.5" and slightly larger squares.
The pattern comes from Camille Roskelley's book Simply Retro. I guess it would be an understatement to say I am obsessed with this book. The pictures and colors are beautiful and there is not a quilt in it that I would not be willing to make. Her instructions are clear and precise and her added tips are perfect for the novice or experienced quilter. This may sounds like a sponsored post but I assure you it's not...I don't really have any readers so it wouldn't really benefit them to sponsor me, ha.

Camille calls this pattern Playground. She created it for her boys and reminisces about their younger years on the playground. To me, it reminds me of those orange life rings...which is ultimately what made me decide to use the Daysail line for this quilt.

Hopefully there will be more to come with a finished quilt soon. Until then...

So, I know there are a million other key FOB tutorials out there waiting to be seen, but since I actually had my camera out and ready to take pictures as I was creating today, I figured I might as well do another one while I am ready and willing.

I see people carrying around these key FOBs all the time and I decided it's about time I make one for myself. Since they were so easy to make, I created a bunch more and will post them on the my Etsy Shop, in case you are feeling lazy and would rather just buy one. I am also doing a special promotion for my blog readers. If you order something from the shop, type in coupon code SEWBLOG to receive a $1.00 discount on any item of your choosing.

Now enough promoting of the shop and onto the tutorial.

Supplies:
Nylon Webbing (I used 1.25" webbing) (10" piece - this can be variable if you want a smaller/larger band)
Ribbon (My ribbon was 1" in width and worked well with the 1.25" webbing (10" or same size as your webbing)
Sewing Machine
Thread
Basting Spray (Any brand will do) or Double sided hem tape
Key FOB hardware - make sure it is the same width of your nylon webbing - I get mine here.
Pliers
Duck tape or regular tape or cloth or anything soft to wrap around pliers

1. Cut your nylon webbing and ribbon to be the same length (or somewhere close)

2. If you are using hem tape, cut your hem tape to the same length as the webbing, lay on top of webbing, and then layer ribbon on top. Press with dry iron. If you are using basting spray (I prefer this method), spray baste on back of the ribbon and then press ribbon onto nylon webbing. Do not spray baste nylon webbing or the sides of your key FOB are going to be sticky...gross.

3. Edge stitch down the sides of ribbon on the webbing, pivot at corners. Don't forget to back stitch at the start and finish. I used my Bernina patchwork foot and aligned my ribbon just inside the foot edge and it worked like a charm.

4. Trim edges of webbing if they are frayed.

5. Fold webbing in half and insert evenly into key fob hardware.

6. Wrap your pliers in whatever material you choose (I ghettoed it up with a strip of fabric), place the pliers in the CENTER of the key fob and give it a nice squeeze.
I don't know about you, but we had a HOT Memorial Day here in Lancaster, PA. I think it reached 90 degrees yesterday, a far cry from the 60's we've been sitting at for the rest of the week. Personally, I prefer the 60's.

Anyway, I whipped up a pair of these City Gym Shorts from The Purl Bee and thoroughly enjoyed getting some use out of them yesterday. I do love these shorts so much. I love the retro look that that binding and the that 'V' slit thing on the side gives. I used Robert Kaufman's Essex Dyed Linen in Flax for the back and binding. For the front accent material I used an old line of Fig Tree & Co called California Girl. I think that was my favorite line of theirs so far and it has long since been discontinued. I was lucky enough to find a little bit at a local quilt shop on sale, so I stocked up big time. I don't fabric hoard though, ahem.
I haven't done too much garment making since I've been sewing, and I have to say, these are a great beginner project. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. They also have a great tutorial on making your own bias binding, you can find it here. I couldn't find my bias tape maker so after cutting the strips and sewing them together, I just folded it in half and ironed, and then folded each raw edge into the center crease and pressed again. It worked like a charm. I do have to say, I'm impressed my bias tape on these shorts, but I will attribute that to The Purl Bee's wonderful tutorial and instructions.
I'm going to apologize for my poor picture quality. We were stuck using my iPhone as my camera battery died before we were able to get any pictures. It's always something. At some point, I'll post some good photos of things that I make on here.

Also, I'm VERY awkward when getting my photo taken...definitely not meant to be a model. As I was going through the photos, most of them my face looked extremely pained, it's making me laugh very hard right now, but what fun would life be if were were all perfect eh?

Recently, I moved back from Florida to my hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

This happened for a multitude of reasons which I won't get into at the moment, but one of the bigger reasons is for my job. I've wanted to be an Oncology Nurse since I first started nursing school. Down in Florida, I worked on an Oncology unit but it was mostly med/surg and complications of treatment. It was a great intro into nursing and a great first job, but I really wanted to be involved in more of the treatment and research. There is an amazing hospital near my hometown that does Bone Marrow Transplants and has an amazing cancer unit, and I was lucky enough to get a job there.

So, while I am already a registered nurse, there are a lot of policies and procedures and techniques in nursing that differ from facility to facility. As a result, when a nurse starts at a new facility, they must go through a very long and intense orientation where a preceptor or preceptors teach and guide you until you are ready to be on your own. I am now two weeks from being on my own and I have had some amazing preceptors that I wanted to thank.

I had a slight idea of what I wanted to make for them, it had to be versatile and classy. Enter the Leather Accent Fold Over Pouch by LBG Studios. You can find the pattern here. This pattern is so well written. It is honestly the most beautiful pouch I have made to date, and thanks to the amazing instructions, I didn't have to rip one stitch.

For the accents, I used suede from the company Leathercraft, found at Joann's. It is thick and beautiful. For the blue pouch, I used Hawthorne Thread's screen printed fabric title 'Rhythmic' in indigo. For the pink pouch, I used a piece from Bonnie Christine's "Winged" line. I embroidered the monograms with my Janome 350e.

They come together so easily and flawlessly. Good thing too, because I've got 2 more to whip up...

I'm a terrible blogger. I never keep up with my posts. Last time I posted was August 14, 2014. I mean, seriously? Thats ridiculous.

You see, it's not been a lack of sewing because I have been doing PLENTY of that. Which makes the whole situation worse because I have so much that I would love to share and get feedback on, but I'm just. too. lazy. You see, the real honest problem, is that I hate transferring pictures from my camera to my computer. That's it, I'm serious. I hate doing it. I could just use my phone since I have all mac products and they integrate very easily, but they don't look nearly as good as when I take them on my Nikon.

So I'm going to work on this problem starting today. My goal is to post at least once a week and I'm going to work really really really hard at it. You see, the blogging world is amazing because there is a massive network of people all over the world, right at your fingertips, who are ready to collaborate and help and share and converse. It's amazing and my laziness is keeping me from that.

So today is the day I am going to integrate my anti-social lazy self into that amazing world. Later, I will be posting my LBG-Studio fold-over clutches. I have been sewing up quite a few for gifts lately and they are amazing and the pattern is absolutely the best.

So stay tuned, I'm coming back. I promise.

I created another mini swoon quilt, except this time, I made it out of one regular-sized swoon block. I instantly fell in love this with block and toyed with the idea of turning it into a full-sized quilt, but then I realized that my background fabric was purple and I really didn't want a whole quilt with a purple background...I don't know, it just wasn't in the plans for me. This block was actually so much fun to create, I loved watching it come together and it was actually MUCH easier than sewing these tiny pieces together for actually mini quilt.
I am excited to announce that this will be the first item listed in my store, however; I will be sad to part with it if it sells.... of course, that would give me an excuse to make another. Have you started any autumn or halloween projects yet this season?

This was the first quilt I ever made. It took me 8 months to finish it. About 5 of the months were it just sitting there, half way quilted. I straight lined quilted this, it took FOREVER, and my attention span is REALLY short. I'm so glad I finished it though because I'm pretty sure it will always be my favorite quilt.
I used the fabric Spring House by Stephanie Ryan and the pattern was a jelly roll quilt pattern by Cluck Cluck Sew. I think I'll do a throwback thursday every week until I show you all of my past quilts. There really aren't that many...but it'll last me a good 8 weeks or so.
It winds me down at the end of the night, it allows me to let my creative side flow and it gives me sense of complete and utter satisfaction when I finish a project. This week, sewing was my anti-therapy. I used Camille Roskelley's pattern for her mini Swoon quilt. The swoon quilt is one of my all time favorite patterns. I have yet to make a full sized quilt but I thought I would give this mini-quilt a try last weekend for a little intro.

I think I ripped more seams on this little guy than I ever have all together in my whole sewing career...and then...I screwed up the binding. WHAT?! I NEVER screw up binding. It is my favorite part of the whole process generally because it is the final finishing touch. I have made 8 quilts this year so far and all have come out with flawless binding. I guess my mind was mush this week because I sewed the binding on with a 1/2" seam allowance for who-knows why because I never use anything but a 1/4" seam allowance for anything in a quilt. Ughhh...I don't know. Needless to say, here it is...screwed up binding (meaning screwed up corners) and everything. Hopefully this week will be better...
Maybe one day, far off in the future, I will remake the binding...for now, I'm not taking any chances!Andreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08282272949543755490noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7535316669007622186.post-24213086163798131792014-08-05T14:28:00.001-07:002014-08-05T14:29:02.632-07:00A bittersweet farewell to Children at Play...So, here is my issue. I keep making these quilts and each new one is my new favorite. So far, each quilt I have made has been for a specific person to give away. I'm usually finishing it at or past my deadline and I am shipping them off before I get any time to spend with them... is that weird? I form an emotional attachment to my quilts. Yeah, I said it. I've spent so much time cutting and creating and piecing and quilting and binding, and then off they go. I guess you never fully know if they get loved the way you hope they do and its really sort of sad.

Needless to say, this Children at Play quilt is my new favorite. I love how vibrant the colors are, especially on the back. I think the orange binding really pulled it together well. Anyway, off it goes tomorrow. I hope my niece will love it as much as I do...

I did the quilting myself but I struggled a little bit. The quilt was pretty heavy and I think I may have thrown away my quilting gloves with a slew of fabric scraps because I can't find them anywhere. The total quilt sized out at 43" x 43". I think this might be the max size that my little sewing machine can handle. I'll have to get them sent out if I make them bigger...or maybe work on a new machine? Hm...

I'm pretty sure it was one of my favorite pastimes. In fact, in a way, it still is. I guess in theory, most of us never stop playing dress up. We sift through outfits trying to find that perfect one for the day. We try on outfit after outfit in the store, checking ourselves out, attempting to "look pretty". Dress up is just another form of us trying to look like the best version of ourselves, and I think sometimes, we forget how fun it once was.

I love this Children at Play fabric by Sarah Jane. It gives a little sense of nostalgia. I am making this quilt for my niece who will be 4 this month. I am hoping that one day when she is older, she will pull this out and remember her play days and not to forget to keep playing...even as she grows older.
So I'm Andrea, I've been sewing for about a year now and I think I'm an addict. This sewing craze that has taken over me is a little bit of an anomaly for me because I tend not to stick with things for very long before I get bored and move onto the next thing. The weird thing about sewing is that the longer I seem to do it, the more obsessed I've become. I am currently sewing on an Brother XR 1355, this crazy little machine cost me a whopping $169 at Costco. At some point in the near future, I will definitely be upgrading but for now, this will have to do. I have to say, for the price, it has treated me quite well over the past year.

My most recent treat to myself was a Janome 350e. I am brand spanking new to embroidery and let me tell you, it is a pretty freaking cool trick. I've only had my machine for about a week so I've just been playing around but so far I've created a doozie, a shirt for my husband with the twitter logo, and a half completed embroidered onesie for my newest nephew (due in a few weeks); I actually screwed that onesie up pretty well so I don't think he will be getting it...oops.

Anyway...let me show you what I've been working on lately.

I finally finished my blocks from the Boardwalk pattern by Fig Tree & Co. I love how the added triangles make the pinwheels look like they are spinning, and I am in love with fabric by Stephanie Ryan called modern roses. The colors work perfectly together.
I created my own log cabin blocks starting with a fussy cut center square. This fabric is by Sarah Jane and is called Children at Play. I am absolutely in love with her fabrics. I have been hoarding these for a few months now and finally decided to cut into them. It breaks my heart to cut into such adorable fabric, but I think it will be worth it in the end.

I just finished piecing this top with the Briar Rose fabric from Heather Ross. I had been holding onto this fabric for quite some time and could not for the life of me figure out what to do with it. Thank God for Pinterest because I came across this gem of a blog: Charlotte's gRACE for a Cure and fell in love with her idea. I pretty much just mimicked what she did. I am going to keep the boarders off mine and just go with a plain white binding.

Aren't those honey bees just to die for? And look how friendly they are. Generally in the face of a bee like that, I would be screaming like a small child...

You know, when I first started sewing, I promised that I would never be one of those people who have a bunch of different unfinished projects laying around. I wanted to finish one before I started on the next. Clearly, I'm not a very good promise-keeper.
